GREATER Western Sydney has restructured its women's football department and appointed Briana Harvey to the new role of Head of Academies and AFLW.

Former AFLW operations manager Libby Sadler has departed the club after three seasons, taking up a position at Sports NSW.

The Giants finished a disappointing 2019 AFLW season in second-last place in Conference B, winning two out of seven games.

Harvey was most recently worked in academy and women's football roles at Sydney and Hawthorn, as well as previously being the high-performance manager for the AFL umpiring department.

Her role at GWS will see her oversee both the AFL and AFLW academies as well as the AFLW and VFLW programs.

The Giants will play five invitational matches in the VFLW this season, coming up against teams which would otherwise have a bye.

"Briana is highly regarded in the industry and joins the club with a wealth of experience from across the AFL system, and more broadly, in high-performance sporting environments," general manager of football Wayne Campbell told the club website.

"Her experience in recruiting, player retention and running academy programs will be invaluable as we continue to grow as a club.

"Libby has played a key role in the establishment of our AFLW program and we thank her for her tireless work in creating the strong culture we've developed in the program."
