The AFL is pleased to advise that due to unprecedented ticketing demands, the inaugural NAB AFLW match between Essendon and Hawthorn on Saturday 27 August has been moved from ETU Stadium to Marvel Stadium.
With the initial allocation of tickets selling out within 24 hours, the relocation gives more members from both clubs and more footy fans in general the opportunity to attend the history making match between the two clubs.
Tickets go on sale at 12:00pm AEST tomorrow, Monday 15 August via Ticketmaster. Tickets are $10 for adults and entry is free for patrons under the age of 18.
The match will be played at the same scheduled time, 7:10pm and fans who have already purchased their tickets to the Round One match will be able to access Marvel Stadium with their existing tickets.2
The clash follows a blockbuster opening round between Collingwood and Carlton at IKON Park on Thursday, the Grand Final rematch on Friday and a stellar line up throughout, with Port Adelaide and Sydney Swans marking their first-ever AFLW games on the Saturday afternoon.
Now in its seventh season, NAB AFLW continues to grow its loyal fanbase, with record membership numbers and attendance rates seen off the back of Season Six and the competition now complete with 18 teams.
AFL EGM Clubs, Finance and Broadcasting Travis Auld said the clubs and their fans made the move possible with their enthusiasm for their clubs’ inaugural match.
“Quite simply the fans of both clubs, and supporters of women’s footy in general showed why we needed to move to a bigger venue by selling out the game so quickly,” Mr Auld said.
“Two proud clubs, a historic occasion for them and another historic moment for the NAB AFLW competition.”
AFL General Manager Women’s Football Nicole Livingstone said the relocation was a testament to the impact the game is having and the appetite for Women’s football.
“We know the appetite for NAB AFLW is huge, but the strength of sales across all nine Round One matches and having an inaugural game sell out in a day is amazing. To be able to see two teams – and traditionally archrivals, no less – debut to a packed Marvel Stadium is the stuff dreams are made of.
“The league is whole; matches are being played in front of thousands of fans and girls across the country are aspiring to be elite players when they grow up – we’re in an incredible place coming into our seventh season and I couldn’t be prouder of every single person who got us here.
“I want to thank every fan who has already bought their tickets to Round One, be it at IKON, Marvel, Blundstone Arena, North Sydney Oval – wherever the team you love is playing that weekend, I have no doubt they’ll do you proud. If you haven’t got yours yet, get in quick or risk missing out on being part of history.” Livingstone said.
Nicole Livingstone will be available to media tomorrow, Monday 15 August at Marvel Stadium. Time approx. 10:30am (Exact time TBC Monday)
