ADELAIDE has reminded new AFLW cross-town rival Port Adelaide who's boss, dominating the first women's Showdown to win by 60 points.
Skipper Chelsea Randall was intent on making a mark early, booting two first-quarter goals (and three for the game) in the 8.15 (63) to 0.3 (3) thumping, passionately pulling at her jumper both times.
Randall won the inaugural AFLW Showdown medal on the back of her 27 disposals, seven clearances and three majors, looking a class above throughout.
Adelaide found just too many free targets in attack, and its ability to find a path to goal when inside 50 was exceptional. It's also the second straight week the Crows have not conceded a goal, following their record-breaking win over Greater Western Sydney.
The few times Port Adelaide found itself in some space, it moved the ball with positivity and intent, but the opportunities were few and far between, and depth in its inside 50 entries was an issue.
POWER V CROWS Full match coverage and stats
The Crows just never let up throughout the game, the only knock on the performance was their inaccuracy in front of goal, but the only thing that cost them was percentage.
Anne Hatchard (24 disposals, nine marks) and Ebony Marinoff (24, 11 tackles) shared the footy among each other, with the Power players unable to match their ability to cover the ground.
Reflective of where the game was played, Power key defender Alex Ballard led her side in disposals (18), with many of her touches coming via kick-outs, and it was tough going for the team's young midfield, who struggled to get their hands on the footy.
McKenzie Dowrick's side may have got the win over younger sister Abbey, but the powerful Crows forward suffered a potentially serious right knee injury, her leg buckling when attempting to jump for a mark in the third term. Eloise Jones' game finished late in the fourth with a foot complaint.
Power young gun Hannah Ewings landed awkwardly on her back in a marking contest early in the second term. She received treatment at times throughout the match, but played out the game.
Erin v the Crows
There was a lot of pre-match discussion as to how Adelaide would attempt to combat its former superstar in Erin Phillips, but Port Adelaide made the options more straightforward. Phillips played forward for most of the match, rarely venturing into the middle (occupied by Ewings, Abbey Dowrick, Justine Mules and Ebony O'Dea). Three-time All-Australian Sarah Allan had the job on Phillips (13 touches), leaving her usual sanctuary of the last line of defence to follow the Power star up the field when required.
A lesson in the contest
Given the disparity in pre-seasons and AFLW experience, the result was no surprise, but Port Adelaide continued to fight out the match. Adelaide recorded 68 more disposals, won the inside-50 count 40-16 and clearances 33 to 11. Port Adelaide failed to win a centre clearance, and the Crows took 18 marks inside 50 to the Power's three.
Say what?
"I think we clearly saw the triple-premiership team that the Crows are, an experienced, hardened football group against a young team. Certainly getting beaten like that at stoppage has an impact, particularly how the Crows set up with the ball in their forward line. There's plenty to learn for us, we're disappointed we weren't able to execute the plan we came in with, but the Crows showed they were the better side." – Port Adelaide coach Lauren Arnell
"Immensely proud of the way they went about it. Obviously it was a big occasion with a big build up, and we thought watching some of Port Adelaide's first month of footy, it was probably their tackle pressure that was their standout feature. We set ourselves to absorb that and apply some of our own pressure back and I thought they did it pretty well." – Adelaide coach Matthew Clarke
