LISA Webb has become the first AFLW player to be appointed senior coach of their former club, taking the reins at Fremantle with a three-year deal.

Webb, who hailed from an elite running background, played six of the club's eight games in 2018 after being signed as a rookie.

The 38-year-old held assistant coaching roles with the Dockers' AFLW side between 2019 and season six last year.

She then moved to the Western Bulldogs' AFLW side for one season – reuniting with husband Marc, an assistant coach with the Dogs' men's program – where her tactical acumen was highly regarded.

Webb is the second AFLW player to graduate to senior coaching ranks, following Lauren Arnell at Port Adelaide.

"It's a really proud moment for me and my family," Webb said.

"Fremantle is a club close to my heart and I am so excited to get to work and help guide such a talented group of young women."

Fremantle axed Trent Cooper at the conclusion of last season, which was heavily affected by injuries, saying the club was keen for a fresh voice to continue to develop the program.

"The senior coach selection committee ran an incredibly professional and thorough process that ensured we had an appropriately considered approach to the appointment of Lisa from what was a high-quality group of final candidates," Fremantle CEO Simon Garlick said.

"We're thrilled to have Lisa return to the club. She is a quality person who will add greatly to the culture and environment at the club.

"She has shown enormous talent as a coach since she was first appointed into a coaching role at the club in 2019 and we believe her capability, drive, care and commitment will assist greatly as we look to create the very best high-performance environment for our W program.

"I would like to welcome Lisa back to Fremantle and we look forward to exciting times together."

Webb will begin her role in March, leaving Carlton as the sole club without an AFLW coach after parting ways with Daniel Harford last month.

Webb will become the fourth woman currently in the AFLW senior coaching ranks. The AFL's women's football vision has an aspirational goal that half of the 18 senior coaches will be women by 2030.
