THE WESTERN Bulldogs have confirmed utility Brit Gutknecht broke both her tibia and fibula against Port Adelaide.

The 21-year-old suffered the break on her right leg while kicking with her left, when a Power player fell across her when attempting to smother.

The game was halted for at least 30 minutes as Gutknecht received treatment on the field, with her mum present, before being taken to hospital by ambulance.

Gutknecht underwent surgery on Sunday, and will remain in Adelaide until she is able to fly back to Melbourne. There is no timeline on her recovery.

"Obviously everyone was pretty emotional – we had a fair chunk of downtime in the middle of the game which we’ve never been through," Dogs midfielder Kirsty Lamb told the club website.

"But credit to the girls, we all rallied around each other.

"We’ll wrap our arms around Brit – it didn’t look nice and she’s probably got a fair recovery ahead of her. She’s in the best hands possible at the moment."
