IT'S A genuine, homegrown AFLW rivalry forged on the field, and this weekend Adelaide and Brisbane will once again face off in a season-defining clash, this time in a preliminary final.

The pair have played a series of high-quality nail-biters over the past six years, with the Lions just having the edge, winning five to the Crows' three.

Why not go back down memory lane and reminisce over some of the best AFLW games to date?

Round five, 2017: Adelaide 4.6 (30) lost to Brisbane 5.3 (33) at Norwood Oval

Adelaide took an eight-point lead into the half-time break, but Brisbane came out full of fire, pulling ahead in the third through Kate McCarthy (THAT running goal) and a rare Kate Lutkins major. It was a see-sawing affair thereafter, Abbey Holmes snatching back the lead for the Crows, before McCarthy's second in the last quarter got the win. Sabrina Frederick controlled the ruck, while Erin Phillips, Chelsea Randall and Deni Varnhagan were best for the Crows, with Sarah Perkins kicking two.

Grand Final, 2017: Brisbane 4.5 (29) lost to Adelaide 4.11 (35) at Metricon Stadium

Brisbane finished the Grand Final with a late flurry (and there was a contentious non-holding the ball decision on the final siren), but an inaccurate Adelaide held firm to win the inaugural AFLW premiership. Kellie Gibson kicked a stunning goal in the opening minute, Phillips was named best-afield and Randall blanketed a teenage Tayla Harris. Emily Bates worked tirelessly in the midfield.

Round one, 2018: Adelaide 3.1 (19) lost to Brisbane 4.7 (31) at Norwood Oval

Brisbane was keen for another shot at Adelaide following its loss in the first AFLW Grand Final, and came up with the goods in round one of the following season. Phillips was a late withdrawal as the Lions held firm, Kaitlyn Ashmore converting a crucial fourth-quarter goal to settle the affair. Leah Kaslar held Perkins to one touch, debutant Sophie Conway kicked the opener and Frederick dominated in the air.

Round one, 2020: Brisbane 5.4 (34) def Adelaide 3.3 (21) at Hickey Park

Brisbane had come off a rare poor season and was facing the reigning premier, but upset Adelaide with a new-look line-up. Anne Hatchard set a then-record for most disposals (34), while the Lions unleashed seven debutants, including Dakota Davidson, Orla O'Dwyer, Greta Bodey and Lily Postlethwaite. Lauren Arnell kicked two goals, and Conway made a strong return from a ruptured ACL.

Round four, 2021: Brisbane 5.3 (33) lost to Adelaide 6.9 (45) at Hickey Park

Phillips was a class above in this high-quality home and away match, booting four goals from her 21 disposals and four clearances to almost single-handedly defeat Brisbane. After a fast Crows start, the Lions closed the gap to just five points halfway through the last quarter, but were unable to deliver the knockout blow, with the Crows defence standing firm. O'Dwyer produced her best game to date in Brisbane colours.

Grand Final, 2021: Adelaide 3.2 (20) lost to Brisbane 6.2 (38) at Adelaide Oval

Brisbane saluted for its maiden AFLW premiership in the second Grand Final decider between the two sides. Lutkins was named best-afield in a starring role in defence, holding firm under enormous pressure, with the Lions kicking into gear in the third term to build the match-winning lead. Ally Anderson ran rampant in the middle and Courtney Hodder kicked two stunning goals, while Stevie-Lee Thompson created plenty of run for the Crows.

Round one, 2022A: Adelaide 6.3 (39) def Brisbane 1.3 (9) at Flinders Uni Stadium

The largest margin between the two sides, Adelaide gained some sort of revenge for its Grand Final loss the year prior, and then some. Brisbane lost key back Lutkins (ACL) and key forward Davidson (ankle) during the match, unsettling its structure. Ash Woodland was the star for the Crows, booting four on her way to the AFLW leading goalkicker award, while Anne Hatchard and Ebony Marinoff controlled play.

Round eight, 2022B: Brisbane 8.5 (53) def Adelaide 4.7 (31) at Metricon Stadium

The most recent of the face-offs – taking place just a month ago – saw Adelaide jump out to an early lead but fail to take advantage of its dominance with an inaccurate 1.4 at quarter-time. From there, Brisbane flexed its muscle, piling on four goals in a dominant showing. Winger Conway was best afield, kicking two goals, while Cathy Svarc laid a casual 12 tackles.
