RICHMOND 2.2 (14) lost to CARLTON 6.12 (48)

  • Carlton's experience was too much for a Richmond side in its first game, with the Blues midfield of Maddy Prespakis, Lucy McEvoy, Sarah Hosking and Katie Loynes (as well as ruck Breann Moody) controlling the game
  • Phoebe Monahan looks set to be a strong leader of Richmond's defence, but the Tigers' transition from the backline to attack needs to be more controlled
  • Sabrina Frederick became the first Richmond AFLW player to kick a goal

  • The game was played in atrocious conditions, with heavy rain marring Gold Coast's AFLW debut. Unsurprisingly, experienced Suns Jamie Stanton and Sam Virgo were their side's best performers
  • Young Giants midfielder Alyce Parker looks set to take her game to another level in her second season, her strength in the contest crucial to the win
  • Fittingly, it was a former Giant in Britt Perry who kicked Gold Coast's first goal

MELBOURNE 3.4 (22) def NORTH MELBOURNE 3.2 (20)

  • Casey Fields once again threw up a strong and tricky cross-breeze to deal with, seeing just one point scored against the wind
  • North had come into the match as favourites given the Demons' lengthy injury list, but young Dee Eden Zanker provided a purple patch up forward to get her side over the line
  • Jasmine Garner starred in the midfield for the Kangas, but coach Scott Gowans said the All-Australian is still to find her best position, and may yet find her way back to the forward line in the weeks to come

BRISBANE 5.4 (34) def ADELAIDE 3.3 (21)

  • It was comfortably the upset of the round, with a Brisbane side decimated by expansion easily accounting for the injury-hit reigning premiers
  • The Crows still had the likes of Ebony Marinoff, Sarah Allan, Jess Foley and Anne Hatchard – who set the record for most disposals – in their side, but were beaten at the contest all match
  • Usual Brisbane midfielder Emma Zielke looked settled behind the ball, while draftee Dakota Davidson has added some much-needed grunt to the forward line

Double debutants dazzle on dream debut

Greta Bodey and Irish recruit Orla O'Dwyer snag two majors in the opening quarter

COLLINGWOOD 5.8 (38) def WEST COAST 1.5 (11)

  • Collingwood finally broke the shackles, winning its first round one match in its fourth attempt. Jaimee Lambert and the returning Chloe Molloy were dominant, while Alana Porter impressed down back in her debut
  • Irish rookie Grace Kelly was a good focal point for West Coast in attack, while skipper Emma Swanson – playing on the ball – had one of her best-ever AFLW performances after an injury-hit few seasons
  • Dana Hooker was West Coast's highest-profile recruit, so it was apt that she kicked the first goal for the Eagles

ST KILDA 2.2 (14) lost to WESTERN BULLDOGS 6.3 (39)

  • After an indifferent season in defence, key position player Bonnie Toogood reminded everyone of her potency up forward, dominating the first quarter with two quick goals for the Western Bulldogs
  • It's early days, but No.5 draft pick Georgia Patrikios may well be one of St Kilda's top few players. She made a few errors as she adjusted to the pace, but her class and natural ball-winning ability came to the fore as the game progressed
  • Molly McDonald was the one of the first few players signed to the club as an under-age priority selection, and her name will go down in history as the first Saint to kick a goal in the AFLW

FREMANTLE 6.8 (44) def GEELONG 4.4 (28)

  • A Geelong defence missing All Australian key back Meg McDonald battled well, but the potency of Fremantle's forward line proved too much, with teenagers Sabreena Duffy and Roxy Roux impressing
  • A stellar performance from Cat Olivia Purcell (27 touches) aside, the Dockers were too strong around the packs, leading to an inside 50 count of 48 to just 13
  • The flip side of that stat was Geelong's ability to score once inside 50.  The Cats recorded eight scoring shots from their 13 entries, making defence the one area of concern for Fremantle
