COLLINGWOOD has confirmed star All-Australian defender Ash Brazill ruptured her left ACL on Friday night, while teammate Georgia Gourlay also ruptured her right ACL at training on Wednesday. 

The news just gets worse for the Pies, with Ruby Schleicher also ruled out for the season with a fractured left wrist, also suffered on Friday night against Melbourne. 

Meanwhile, St Kilda has confirmed 19-year-old Tarni White ruptured her left ACL in the opening stages of the match against Fremantle. A torn right ACL kept her out of the 2018 NAB AFLW Draft.

Teammate Kate McCarthy's left leg was caught underneath her in a tackle, with an ultrasound (she is unable to have MRIs due to her pacemaker) showing she has suffered damage to her MCL in her knee. The Saint has not yet been ruled out for the season, but a return date has not been set.

Pie Brazill, 30, was stretchered off after her leg buckled while attempting to corral Melbourne's Chantel Emonson. 

Scans showed not only a ruptured ACL, but also damage to her MCL and a tear to her lateral meniscus.

"The whole club is devastated for ‘Braz’ who will sit aside for not one but two campaigns this year," Collingwood general manager of women’s sport Jane Woodlands-Thompson said. 

"With 'Braz' being in the prime of her career, with Australian honours across both of her codes, the news is extremely disappointing. 

"Our support is also behind Ruby who had shown such resilience in making a return from an earlier (knee) injury."

Gourlay, who played five games for the Pies last year, has re-ruptured her right ACL for a third time, having undergone two knee reconstructions in her junior career. 

After nine ruptured ACLs in 2019, there have been a rash the same injury in the AFLW this year, with White the 12th player sidelined. Over that time, the playing pool has increased by 120 women.
