A VENTURE into ground announcing at Fremantle AFL home games has put AFLW vice-captain Ange Stannett out of her comfort zone, but it's not necessarily a bad thing.

The 26-year-old is continually working on being comfortable with not perfecting things from the outset, and that it's OK to make mistakes.

"For me, it's managing my expectations. We touched on my MC work I've been getting into, and it's being brand new to a role that I haven't had too much experience in, and trying to manage my expectations that I'm not excelling in every single moment," Stannett said.

"There's going to be those learning moments, and that's how I'm looking at it and not be so hard on myself at times when maybe I don't go as well as I want to. That's both on and off the field.

"Those mental skills are something that's a constant battle and something I'm constantly working on. It’s a funny one, we work on our physical skills so much, and we've been doing it from such a young age, I think we're just waking up to the mental side of it.

"That's an ongoing, work-in-progress there, but something that I'm working on."

Perfectionism is a double-edged sword, particularly in high-achieving athletes, as it can be motivational but also lead to avoidance, poor self-talk and a fear of failure.

"There's no way you'd say something like that to one of your teammates, so you've got to remind yourself of why you're saying it to yourself," Stannett said.

"It's a hard one, because in part, it's a part of us that's got us to this level, to playing AFLW, that we do set these expectations and we do want to try to meet them, and that's what motivates us to be as good as we can be.

"But we've just got to be aware of it, because it can be detrimental at times."
