MELBOURNE'S clash with Carlton on Saturday might become the most pivotal home and away match of the 2020 AFLW season.

The Conference B rivals are second and third with four wins and one loss each, so even a small slip could cost either side a spot in the finals.

It's a scenario that Melbourne midfielder Karen Paxman knows all too well.

"The game on the weekend assisted with the percentage and we all know that it's important in this competition," Paxman told womens.afl.

"We've missed out on the finals in the past due to percentage."

The Demons are aiming to become the best team in the League, but Paxman admits they've been a little bit inconsistent.

Facing a top-line opponent will not only bring out the best in Melbourne, but it will also highlight where each side can win and lose games.

The Blues have showcased excellent ball movement lately, which might be an area in which they can get the edge.

But for Melbourne, it all starts in the middle.

"We have a style that's similar in spreading the ground and attacking the open side," Paxman said.

"I play in the midfield, so I might bring it on myself to get the upper hand in there."

Paxman has been a premier midfielder since the competition's inception, but the 31-year-old has become more than a ball-winner in what's been the most well-rounded year of her career.

"It's not that hard to get possessions, but it's what you do with them," Paxman said.

"I can certainly say I'm fitter and stronger than I've ever been and probably the most polished with my skills that I've ever been."

A dominant performance from Paxman on Saturday night might just change the whole finals race.
