AFTER a helter-skelter few weeks of the AFLW Sign and Trade Period, AFLW club lists for 2021 are nearly complete.

Clubs with fewer than 27 players can continue to sign delisted free agents until Friday, after which the final draft order will be confirmed.

A mixed bag for the Crows. The 2019 premiers have lost a lot of experience through retirements, but retained the core of their list, including the prized signature of superstar Phillips. Sedunary should slot straight back into the team after a year at St Kilda (if fully fit, she's currently rehabbing a serious ankle injury), but young midfielder Munyard and defender Whiteley are less likely to crack the best 21.

After a few years of trade turmoil triggered by expansion teams, Brisbane appear to finally have a settled line-up. The Lions have retained 26 of its 30-strong 2020 squad and added young tall forward Smith from the Suns. While it may not happen straight away, the combination of Smith and Wardlaw should be a handful for opposition defences for years to come. Maintenance and development should be the focus of Brisbane next year.

Could things have gone any better for Carlton? The loss of Hosking for the older O'Dea (24 versus 28) could hurt down the track, but for a side on the hunt for a flag, O'Dea's ability to hit the scoreboard – not just dominate the middle – is an immediate upside. Recuperating from a torn ACL, Guerin is unlikely to take to the field next year, while Hammans adds depth up forward. With Van Dyk having missed most of 2020 through injury, the Blues have already proven they can cover for the defender with Laloifi. The only negative is the unavailability of tough midfielder Dalton – who finished second in the club's best and fairest – due to rugby commitments.

A very busy period for the Pies, who will be looking to continue their upward trajectory next year. It'll be a different-looking forward line (a weaker area in 2020), losing talls D'Arcy and Lynch and bringing in pacey small Newman. Green will add ruck support after the retirement of Hynes. Trading out of the first round was a shrewd move, and it means the Pies now only have to use pick 19 on father-daughter Tarni Brown, as well as snagging a bonus second-rounder out of the pick swap with the Dogs.

It was a very successful re-signing period for Fremantle, with only Bresland moving to cross-town rivals West Coast after losing 10 players during last year's expansion. If the Dockers' forward line wasn't dangerous enough, they've now added goalsneak and the 2019 WAFLW leading goalkicker Tester as a delisted free agent. Trend should suit Fremantle's tough defence and can also add depth to the midfield if needed.

The Cats are rarely big players in Trade Period, and that was the case once again in 2020. They're backing improvement to come from within, and while there's a high-quality young midfield core on the list, there are still questions over the forward line support around 34-year-old Phoebe McWilliams. Time will tell whether trading pick five (and a handful of others) to Melbourne for a larger presence in the late-first/early-second round was the right call.

An interesting first Trade Period for the Suns, who were very quiet until the final day. They've added some experience to their midfield in Drennan, while trading away two youngsters in Hammans and Smith. Hammans and the now delisted Whap-Farrar were both pre-listed under-18s out of the club's academy. With just 24 of 30 locked in for 2021, it's now a wait-and-see situation till October's NAB AFLW Draft as to how the club's list will be shaped.

For a squad built up of players from around the country, a big tick to the Giants for holding onto 25 of its 2020 group. Bringing in Smith on a two-year deal was also a positive; the ex-Dee will add leadership and stability to the backline. GWS' biggest question mark in 2020 was composure, so while adding a second quality recruit would have been useful, hopefully carrying a consistent squad will help in that regard.

It's safe to say Melbourne's Trade Period was one out of the books – a big list turnover, with good players traded rather than delisted, and bringing in draft picks rather than players. O'Dea is a huge loss, and while the Dees covered the unavailability of Smith and Jakobsson this year, they're still best-21 players in any other team and would have been useful additions in 2021. Cordner was also a crucial cog in defence, capable of taking the opposition's biggest forward and pinch-hitting in the ruck. The Dees have a very healthy handful of picks, including selection three in the Victorian pool, but there's now a hell of a lot riding on this draft.

A fairly cunning Trade Period from North Melbourne, who didn't really need to add much to its list in the first place. While not an outright steal, pick 43 for the tenacious Campbell was definitely a win for the Roos, who now have more quality midfielders than they know what to do with. While Trend played every game in 2020, the returning Duffin (pregnancy) will comfortably fill that spot in the 21. North also managed to wriggle its way into a three-way trade by contributing draft picks, which eventuated into upgrading its second-rounder from 29 to 22.

The Tigers traded out the middle portion of their draft hand for a quartet of strong, experienced players in a bid to stabilise its fledgling list. The loss of Campbell for just pick 43 will hurt a comparatively shallow midfield, as will the retirement of Wood.

St Kilda had quite a strong first Trade Period, holding onto the majority of their fairly successful inaugural team. Class was needed to support the developing squad, and Jakobsson and Van Dyk will provide that in defence. The loss of Sedunary's dynamism up forward will hurt, but the Saints will back the likes of Xenos to continue her development. They will carry a healthy hand into the draft but will likely need their second or third-rounder on father-daughter selection Alice Burke.

Like the Suns, the Eagles cut a fair way into their inaugural list with five delistings (as well as two retirements). Attracting quality midfielder/forward McCarthy from Western Bulldogs was a big win, while Bresland should slot straight into the retiring Radan's spot in defence. Again, like the Suns, the list is a wait-and-see proposition ahead of October's draft, but some experienced, steady heads are definitely needed after a very tough first season.

After a few years of heavy expansion losses, Bulldogs fans everywhere will be heaving a sigh of relief after the club escaped the Trade period with just one top-line player leaving. Trading in Lynch suggests star key position player Huntington will once again play in defence. McCarthy is a loss to a midfield already reliant on a few players, but pick 16 is handy compensation. Some clever trades have left the Dogs with the strongest draft hand in the competition.
