CARLTON superstar Madison Prespakis' bid to overturn a one-match suspension has failed, and she will be sidelined for Saturday night's must-win match against North Melbourne.

The reigning AFLW best and fairest winner will also be ineligible to defend her crown in April's W Awards after the ban was upheld.

Prespakis had been charged with rough conduct for a dangerous tackle on Richmond's Sarah Hosking.

The incident against her former teammate had been graded as careless and high contact with medium impact, which carries a one-match suspension with an early guilty plea under the AFLW system.

Prespakis' counsel Peter O'Farrell first challenged whether it was careless conduct, and then if the jury of Richard Loveridge, Stewart Loewe and Stephen Jurica believed it should be so, argued the impact should be dropped from medium to low.

Carlton submitted two additional incidents as a comparison point for the jury which had resulted in MRO sanctions: a tackle on Sophie Conway by Georgie Rankin in round two, 2020 (reprimand) and another on Shae Audley by Ashlee Atkins in round seven, 2018.

The latter resulted in one-game suspension, with Audley concussed in the incident.

Hosking's medical report was submitted, with the Tiger requiring and passing a concussion and neck assessment, with no further treatment required. She returned to the game thereafter.

Prespakis argued Hosking drove her shoulder into the Blue's midriff, winding her, in an attempt to break the tackle and it was that momentum which caused Hosking to land the way she did.

AFL counsel Jeff Gleeson and Prespakis disagreed as to whether Hosking's arms were pinned, with Gleeson suggesting the left bicep of Hosking was held, while Prespakis said that Hosking's forearms were free.

In his address to the AFLW Tribunal jury, Gleeson was strong about the potential for the tackle to cause injury.

"This vision is uncomfortable to watch. It's awful. When the player rotates fully across … and upside down with the full force on her neck, it's the sort of thing likely to cause injury, and serious injury," Gleeson said.
