GREATER Western Sydney's Irish recruit Brid Stack has been released from hospital and has avoided serious damage after being injured in a tackle during a AFLW practice match against Adelaide.

She was treated by the club doctor and physios for a possible spinal injury late in the final quater, before the match was abandoned and an ambulance came on to the field to transport her to hospital.

Stack was diagnosed with a stable fracture of the C7 vertebra in her neck, with no damage to the nerves surrounding the area. Her injury does not require surgery, but she will wear a neck brace as she recovers.

Giants head of women's football Bri Harvey said the club was thankful Stack was OK after the 'incredibly unfortunate' incident.

"Bríd and her family have made incredible sacrifices to come to Australia to play in the AFL Women's competition and we will be supporting them all the way through her recovery," she said.

"We'd like to thank all those who provided Bríd with the best possible care both at the ground and in hospital across Sunday."

Stack, 34, is a champion Gaelic footballer, having won 11 All-Ireland titles with Cork and was named the GAA's 2016 Ladies Footballer of the Year.

She joined the Giants ahead of the 2021 AFLW season, boosting the club's Irish contingent headed by legendary Irish footballer Cora Staunton.

GWS has twice moved to temporary bases this month - in Albury and Adelaide - because of Sydney's coronavirus outbreak.

It will allow the club to enter Western Australia for the scheduled round one fixture against Fremantle on January 31.
