Friday, February 14

Western Bulldogs v Melbourne, VU Whitten Oval, 7.40pm AEDT

  • The Bulldogs got off to a flying start against St Kilda, booting four goals in the first quarter before the Saints threw players behind the ball. Bonnie Toogood looks set to re-find her groove up forward after a defensive 2019, but a reshuffle will have to occur to cover for ruck Celine Moody (ankle)
  • Tegan Cunningham is usually the focal point of Melbourne's attack (and will be set for a fierce battle with Lauren Spark), but small forward Kate Hore was the most dangerous last week. Expect some close attention from a defender such as Naomi Ferres (who is currently sporting a stunning shiner after a head knock against St Kilda)
  • Tip: Melbourne won't let the Western Bulldogs jump out to the early lead it had against St Kilda and will just have the edge over a comparatively young side. Dees by seven points.

Saturday, February 15

North Melbourne v Greater Western Sydney, University of Tasmania Stadium, 3.10pm AEDT

  • North Melbourne will be smarting after a close loss to Melbourne. Keep an eye out as to just where Jasmine Garner lines up after impressing in the midfield, but the side having missed her marking ability up forward.
  • The Giants would have had a strong focus on recovery this week after playing in torrid conditions in round one. Young midfield star Alyce Parker may end up going head to head with the 2018 AFLW best and fairest Emma Kearney in a battle of the ball-winners.
  • Tip: GWS' grit was impressive against Gold Coast, but North Melbourne will be a bridge too far. Kangaroos by 19 points.

Gold Coast v Richmond, Metricon Stadium, 4.10pm AEST

  • Gold Coast didn't get nearly enough supply to its forwards in horrible conditions against GWS, recording just eight inside 50s for the match. Expect a higher return against a less experienced Richmond side.
  • No one could have questioned Richmond's intensity against Carlton, but finishing skills and connection up the ground left a bit to be desired. Monique Conti will be better for the run after spending much of pre-season fulfilling her basketball commitments.
  • Tip: Both sides will be eager to get their first win in the book, but Richmond's dangerous forward line (Christina Bernardi, Courtney Wakefield, Sabrina Frederick) will give it the edge. Tigers by 14 points.

West Coast v Fremantle, Optus Stadium, 4.10pm AWST

  • If early indications are accurate, West Coast will be heavily reliant on experienced campaigners Emma Swanson and Dana Hooker in 2020, the pair accounting for 24 per cent of the team's disposals against Collingwood.
  • Fremantle's firepower was on show against Geelong, recording 14 scoring shots from a round-high 48 inside 50s. The Dockers will be keen to improve their efficiency once in there, but Gemma Houghton, Sabreena Duffy and Roxy Roux will be a handful.
  • Tip: A finals fancy up against an expansion side implies a one-sided affair, and that will most likely be the case in the first AFLW Derby. Dockers by 32 points.

Sunday, February 16

Geelong v Brisbane, GMHBA Stadium, 1.10pm AEDT

  • Geelong very rarely got the ball into its forward line against Fremantle, but was incredibly efficient when it did, scoring eight times from just 13 inside 50s. Usual midfielder Maddy Keryk played in defence to great effect, recording a competition-high 12 effective kicks.
  • Brisbane will be hoping to back up its stunning 13-point win over reigning premiers Adelaide. The young side played with a lot of intensity and confidence, with Irish rookie Orla O'Dwyer providing moments of brilliance and good game sense.
  • Tip: A difficult game to read. Geelong plays well at GMHBA Stadium, but Brisbane might have the edge at the coalface. Lions by 11 points.

Carlton v Collingwood, Ikon Park, 3.10pm AEDT

  • Carlton announced its season intentions with a bang, comprehensively outplaying Richmond in the season opener. The prospect of former Blue Brianna Davey (if fit) and Maddy Prespakis meeting in the middle is tantalising.
  • We have never seen a Collingwood side take winning form into round two. The defensive duo of Stacey Livingstone and Ash Brazill will match up well against Tayla Harris and the resting ruck (Breann Moody or Al Downie).
  • Tip: As impressive as Collingwood looked against West Coast, Carlton should to go deep in the finals in 2020. Blues by 19 points.
05:13

Adelaide v St Kilda, Hisense Stadium, 4.40pm ACDT

  • It has been a disastrous start to Adelaide's premiership defence, but the Crows dropped round one in 2019 and went on to steamroll the competition. All eyes will be on Anne Hatchard after a record-breaking 35 disposals against Brisbane.
  • Georgia Patrikios was a shining light for St Kilda in its first ever match, adjusting well to the pace of AFLW and showing neat skills playing on the ball. The Saints were probably missing an additional tall to target up forward against the Bulldogs, so team selection will be intriguing.
  • Tip: Adelaide to bounce back on its home deck against a young St Kilda side. Crows by 23 points.
