SCANS have revealed rising Geelong forward Olivia Barber has avoided a torn ACL in her right knee while playing for the Cats' VFLW side on Saturday.

She has instead torn her PCL, and is now aiming to start pre-season training with her teammates in September (starting date yet to be confirmed).

The 19-year-old was highly impressive in her first AFLW season, showing rare mobility and agility for her height of 185cm.

It means Geelong has avoided a significant blow, having been the lowest scoring team this year. Aside from 35-year-old Phoebe McWilliams, they struggled for targets forward of centre.

The Cats have had horrific luck with serious injuries in recent years, losing number one pick Nina Morrison to two ACLs over two seasons and No.14 pick Olivia Purcell to a torn ACL halfway through the season.

Purcell has since indicated she wants to look elsewhere to continue her AFLW career, and has been heavily linked to Melbourne.

Geelong is currently without an AFLW senior coach, after Paul Hood resigned following a one-win season.

He is still assisting with the VFLW team, who sit in second spot after 12 rounds with a percentage of 192.
