FREMANTLE will be without star forward Sabreena Duffy for the 2022 NAB AFL Women's season after moving her to the club's inactive list.
Duffy will focus on her work career after a recent promotion with the Department of Justice meant that she would be unavailable for the pre-season that begins in September.
The 21-year-old was Fremantle's leading goalkicker again in 2021, booting 10 goals in her third AFLW season. She has kicked 30 goals in her 25 games for Fremantle across three seasons since making her debut in 2019.
Dockers general manager of football operations and performance Joe Brierty said the club backed Duffy's decision to take some time away from the Club.
“Sabreena is an exciting player, a fan favourite and a valued part of our team, so we are disappointed we won’t see her line up in the upcoming AFLW season. However, we acknowledge the importance of Sabreena’s wellbeing and the career opportunity that has been presented,” he said.
“This decision allows Sabreena to prioritise her career and her wellbeing, and our priority will be to provide regular support to Sabreena and stay in close contact with her during her time away from the club.”
”Hopefully, we will see her back in purple for season seven of the AFLW.”
Duffy said the balance between work and football had been challenging for the star forward.
“I love playing football with my teammates but it has been a challenging few years for me off the footy field. I want to take some time away from the game to be at my best before hopefully returning in season seven,” Duffy said.
“I have also been provided with a full-time work opportunity in an officer role which allows me to spend more time with kids and making an impact in the community. This is an opportunity I’m extremely passionate about and one that I know will progress my professional working career."
The Dockers will now take six picks to the NAB AFL Women's Draft, to be held at the end of July.
