GOLD Coast has appointed David Lake as the coach of its inaugural AFLW team.

Lake won the job with a resume that includes 15 years of coaching in Queensland and mostly recently being an assistant to Brisbane's Craig Starcevich as the club made the first two AFLW Grand Finals.

"The further in I went, the more I wanted to do this. I'm excited," Lake said.

Lake has coached Mt Gravatt and Morningside in the Queensland State League, as well as representative duties coaching Queensland, Papua New Guinea in the AFL International Cup and the first Gold Coast Suns women's representative team that played the Brisbane Lions in 2016.

Lake said he had learned plenty from his time with Brisbane that he would apply to his new role.

"I loved the way we were set up," he said.

"We had a really good balanced environment where people could learn – to mirror something like that would be a good thing.

"My personal view is this will be the busiest part.

"A list build is everything and getting the right people and going through a process of how to bring those right people into your organisation and what your key points are and what you think is important, will play a massive role.

"The first 12 months will be the hardest part.

"Get that right and the rest will be fun."

Gold Coast head of women's football Fiona McLarty said Lake's involvement in Queensland football was a big reason for hiring him.

"The reason we got a license was because of the talent we got coming through in Queensland," she said.

"We want to have a predominantly Queensland list, so knowing the networks across Queensland football, across the whole state … was really important and a point of difference that David brought to us."
