THE OPENING round of the NAB AFL Women's season is set for a shake-up, just eight days out from the season opener, after Western Australia announced changes to its border restrictions on Thursday.

In response to rising numbers of COVID cases in South Australia and Queensland, the WA Government moved both states to the 'extreme risk' category from 6pm on Friday, December 31, meaning that no travel into Western Australia is permitted unless in extraordinary circumstances.

The change will affect the Fremantle v Adelaide and West Coast v Brisbane games that have been scheduled for round one. The season-opening game between St Kilda and Richmond will be played on Friday, January 7.

An AFL spokesperson said the League was working with the clubs and venues on changes to the fixture, which could potentially affect the early rounds of the season in addition to round one.

"The AFL understands the decision by the WA Government and will now work with clubs and venues on implementing our contingency plans," the spokesperson said.

"We will release an updated fixture once everything is locked in and look forward to our season getting underway next week."
