BROWNLOW Medal betting on Sam Mitchell was suspended on Monday afternoon following the match review panel's decision to charge the Hawthorn captain with a level two tripping offence.

Mitchell, 25, incurred a penalty of 125 demerit points and a week's suspension for his actions against Melbourne's Simon Buckley, which can be reduced to 93.75 points and eligibility to play this round with an early plea.

But as the initial penalty awarded exceeded 100 points, should Mitchell take the early plea or alternatively plead his case and lose at the tribunal, the talented Hawk will become ineligible for football's most esteemed individual prize.

Club football manager Mark Evans said the Brownlow was "not a consideration" as the unbeaten Hawks weigh up whether to contest his tripping charge.

"We don't think there's a lot to answer for, but there might be more danger than benefit," Evans said of the incident.

"We will make our final decision tomorrow morning."

AFL rules dictate players found guilty of offences initially totalling 100 or more demerit points are ineligible to win the Brownlow.

"We've suspended him in the Brownlow at the moment, but we haven't suspended betting on the medal itself," TAB Sportsbet's Gary Davies told afl.com.au on Monday evening.

"As soon as we found out, we suspended betting on him today, and we'll just wait on the decision and find out what comes from it.

"We'll keep him suspended until we find out the outcome of it all."

Mitchell was second favourite to win the award when betting was closed on Monday evening, after the release of the match review panel's findings.

"[Gary] Ablett was at $5.50 [at the time of Mitchell's suspension], and Mitchell was at $6.00 for the Brownlow win when the news came through," Davies said.

Hawthorn has until 11am on Tuesday morning to decide whether it will contest the charge at the tribunal.
