QUEENSLANDER Joel Wilkinson took out the sprint double on day two of the NAB AFL Draft Combine when he followed up his 20m sprint record with the fastest time in the repeat sprint test.

Earlier in the day, Eastern Ranges’ defender Brad Harvey broke Danyle Pearce’s record 2.79sec over 20m, but he only held the record for about 30 minutes before Wilkinson broke his  new mark with a time of 2.75sec.

Both combine attendees were bullish about their chances in the repeat sprint test later in the day with a tantalising rematch in the offing.

The test of both speed and endurance sees participants run six 30m sprints with a 15-second break in between with the total time of each sprint combined to come up with a final total.

Harvey led midway through the test which sees three players run at one time and he duly knocked off Murray Bushranger Shaun Atley’s leading time of 23.69sec by 0.23 seconds.

No one had come near Harvey’s time when Wilkinson stepped up. At the end of his run he led the field with a time of 23.40sec and was not bettered.

“I always did athletics at school but I was never really that serious,” Wilkinson said of his speedy display.

“I’ve never tried to focus all my strengths on making it at the elite level of athletics, so I was surprised that I ran that [time] today.”

In other testing results on day two, Eastern Ranges’ forward Kieran Harper moved himself up the prospective draft order with a running vertical leap of 88cm. That was enough to finish first but he had to share the honour with Ranges’ teammate Harvey who continued his impressive combine display.

Geelong Falcon Billie Smedts is the most agile player at the 2010 combine after recording a time of 7.9sec to lead the field in the agility test which sees players try to negotiate a series of pylons without knocking any down.

Former Sydney Swan Ryan Brabazon, who has paid his own way to Canberra in a bid to restart his AFL career, finished fifth.
