Hobart

Day 3 for those in Hobart began at the Tasmanian Season Launch. The breakfast event celebrates the Tasmania-Hawthorn relationship and officially launches the 2010 football season in Tasmania.

Jeff Kennett, Alastair Clarkson and Sam Mitchell were amongst guests including Tasmanian Premier David Bartlett and Greens Leader Nick McKim.

Following the breakfast the Hobart group split into four smaller groups for various activities around the city.

Josh Gibson and Brad Sewell made their way across to Strive for Life in New Town.

Strive for Life is a program which promotes healthy living for children and was hosted in the New Town basketball stadium.

Around 200 children and their families enjoyed a host of activities including face painting, obstacle courses, running and skipping games, yogurt and fruit smoothie making and got to meet two of Hawthorn’s best ambassadors for health and well-being, Gibson and Sewell.

Ensuring children have healthy role models remains a key focus of many of the community program that the Hawks involve themselves in, and Strive for Life were a great partner to help deliver this message to the children of New Town.

Travis Tuck and Luke Lowden visited the children’s ward and also the Dwyer rehabilitation ward at the Royal Hobart Hospital.

Alastair Clarkson, Wayde Skipper, Sam Grimley, Riley Milne and Brent Guerra visited Risdon Prison. The group met with inmates and the Minister for Corrections, Lisa Singh MP.

The players enjoyed a spirited Q&A session lead by the coach. Following, inmates joined the players for a casual kick-to-kick in the prison yard.

Sam Mitchell, Cyril Rioli, Garry Moss and Shane Savage were given the opportunity to jump in kayaks for a Hobart Paddle experience - paddling from Sandy Bay to Hobart marina.

Launceston

Players in both Launceston groups split up to cover as much territory as possible in the State’s north on the third and final day of the Hawks’ Community Camp.

Lance Franklin and Michael Osborne visited the gorgeous Tamar Valley Winery for a quick tour before heading to Beaconsfield Primary School for a signing session and kick-to-kick with the kids. Beaconsfield mine survivor, Todd Russell, surprised the pair by stopping by for a chat.

Luke Hodge, Jordan Lewis, Ryan Schoenmakers and Matt Suckling travelled to Barnbougle for a round of golf on one of Australia’s most famous and beautiful courses, Barnbougle Dunes.

Grant Birchall, Simon Taylor, Liam Shiels, Luke Breust, Jordan Lisle, Will Sierakowski and Jordan Williams were hosted by community partner Down Syndrome Tasmania at Tassie Tiger Mini Golf.

The players had a wonderful time playing with the kids, who showed some real talent with a putter, after which they joined the rest of the Launceston group at the airport to depart for Melbourne.

The Launceston group would like to thank all the kids, parents, volunteers, our community partners and Tourism Tasmania for their wonderful support over the three days. The players are looking forward to their first game of the Pre-season Cup at Aurora Stadium next Saturday night, we hope to see our Tasmanian supporters there!

Burnie

The final day in Burnie began with another great meal from the Weller’s Inn. Their hospitality over the 3 days was outstanding. Once organized the boys split into three groups and headed to separate destinations to discuss elements of their life as an AFL footballer.

Jarryd Morton, Jarryd Roughead and Campbell Brown headed to Camp Clayton to discuss leadership with a select group of teenagers from the North region of Tasmania. Jarrod Kayler Thomson, Beau Dowler and Rhan Hooper visited Mannington’s Child Care to participate in craft activities and playtime and Cameron Stokes and Taylor Duryea shared their thoughts on Potential with an eager group of people from the Ulverstone area.

The players were impressed with the level of engagement at each venue.

Soon after the forums, the players found themselves knee deep in a beautiful dam in Upper Natone. The Natone Hills Fishery Experience welcomed all the players and shared their expertise in the difficult craft of fly fishing.

Cameron Stokes and Rhan Hooper paid particular notice and both hooked a rainbow trout in quick time. Unfortunately, Jarryd Roughead and Campbell Brown’s effort to dress appropriately in waders and fishing hat failed to entice any fish.

The North West coast has certainly welcomed Hawthorn Football Club and displayed the finest of hospitality.  It is a beautiful part of Tasmania and we look forward to returning.
