ST KILDA will make at least four changes to the side that will face Adelaide this week at AAMI Stadium.

Coach Ross Lyon named Lenny Hayes and Clint Jones as certain starters and expected Michael Gardiner and Zac Dawson to be available as well.

"There's a few of them, which is nice," Lyon said from Saints training on Tuesday afternoon.

"We've got to get through the week, we’ll train today - we call it T1 and then we’ll do our T2 -  and then we'll have an idea [of who is available]. Once they've all ticked off then we'll firm up selection and have our final team meeting in preparation for Adelaide.

"It's a nice position to be in, to have your spot and double chance sewn up.”

Hayes will return from a one-week back injury, Jones from an ankle, Gardiner from the hamstring he hurt against Port Adelaide and Dawson from the hand he injured in round 18.

Lyon said he was also keen to keep young midfielder David Armitage in the side after he played well in his senior first game since round eight.

He also said the Saints were taking a "case-by-case" approach toward selection with the finals in sight.

“Lenny was one we could have pushed through the week before and Clint Jones and a couple of others,” he said.

"If someone will really benefit from missing [they will not play] ... but we're certainly not going to be flippant at all with the selections.

“We want our best 22 available but if someone does need the week and we think that will benefit them, we will make that decision.”

Defender Steven Baker has continued to push his case for a recall in the first week of the finals by returning to training following a mishap with his toe.

Sandringham, St Kilda's VFL affiliate, failed to make the finals which means its season ended on Saturday, but Lyon said the Saints were comfortable with the idea of putting players like Baker through a tough training session as opposed to holding a practice match this weekend.

“I don’t think there is any substitute for an AFL game but we’ll do the next best thing and train them really intensely,” he said.

“[Baker] is tracking reasonably well. I had discussions with him this morning and obviously it’s going to go down to the wire for him.

“There’s incumbents in the team he has to displace but we’ve got a lot of time for Stevie.

“He’s running and training and working through that so I’m really optimistic.”

Lyon said the Crows would provide the Saints with the “perfect prelude to finals” given the way they played against Collingwood on Saturday night and the fact they’re set to farewell Simon Goodwin, Brett Burton and Andrew McLeod before the game.
