COLLINGWOOD onballer Wellingham says he has had no dialogue with Melbourne despite reports linking him to the Demons.

A newspaper report on Monday morning said the Demons had turned their focus to Wellingham, who is still yet to sign a new contract with Collingwood after talks stalled two months ago.

The Demons have strong Collingwood links, with former Magpies midfield coach Mark Neeld now the senior coach at Melbourne, and Wellingham's former teammate Leigh Brown also on the club's coaching staff.

But Wellingham, 24, told AFL.com.au there was no substance to the reports.

"Nothing at all. Some things are just going to be said. I don't read too much into it," he said.

Wellingham said he had given little thought to signing a new contract as he concentrated on the club's finals campaign, but said he wanted to stay a Magpie.

"Hopefully," he said. "I've said that I don't really want to worry about it until later on, especially with the finals. I've got better things to worry about.

"I'm really trying to focus on finals and the bigger picture as far as the season goes."

Wellingham had 19 touches in Saturday night's win over West Coast but has struggled to recapture his form since he was suspended following a hit on Carlton's Kade Simpson in round 15.

He denied he had been in a slump but admitted relief that the criticism had eased.

"The public may have been making a bit of noise about the form of a few players down here but it's really the opinion of the people inside the club who we were worrying about," he said.

"There hasn't been too much ruckus about myself and a number of other players. In saying that it's always nice to get a pat on the back from the outside world and to hit form at this stage of the season."

Wellingham said Simpson incident had not affected his confidence.

"As soon as the report happened and I served my suspension I got back out there and all I worried about was playing footy," he said.
