CTV> Ben Camilleri speaks to CTV about his first week at Collingwood and his goals for this season

A Magpie supporter since birth, Ben Camilleri experienced the ultimate supporter’s dream when he signed a NSW scholarship contract with the club last week.

Camilleri travelled down to the Lexus Centre on Monday from Broken Hill (NSW) to meet the coaches and train with the players.

“When I found out I could be eligible for the scholarship I just jumped at the chance especially because I barrack for Collingwood”, Camilleri told CTV after training at Gosch’s Paddock on Wednesday.

“It’s been a great experience.  Mixing it with the best of the AFL, what more could you ask for?”

The 180-centimetre midfielder was noticed by national recruiting manager Derek Hine and his staff last year during under-16 carnivals and the recent championship in Coffs Harbour.

“We see Ben fitting in nicely with the current list due to his versatility to play in the midfield and in a variety of defensive positions,” Hine told Collingwoodfc.com.au.

“It’s quite conceivable that Ben will be on the list in nine months time.  We will be working closely with Ben over the next six months to fast track his development.

“It is particularly pleasing to have Ben potentially play six games with our VFL tea m once his commitments with the NSW Rams are completed.”

The 17 year old will join fellow scholarship holder, Tom Young, on the NSW Rams this season.

“I would like to be one of those in and under players who can get on the ball and also have a hit out down back.”

Michael Malthouse watched the new addition closely at training on Wednesday but Camilleri has yet to receive instructions from the head coach.

“They haven’t had a big talk to me but they just keep encouraging me and doing what I am doing.”

With the addition of Ben Camilleri, there are now seven players on Collingwood's NSW scholarship list.  Click HERE to view the full list.
