THE BRISBANE Lions are well prepared to cope while skipper Jonathan Brown is sidelined with injury, coach Michael Voss says.

Voss told afl.com.au on Friday the Lions had tailored much of their pre-season training to reduce their reliance on key forward Brown, a strategy he was confident would pay off.

"During pre-season we looked at our system and the way our game style had to become less dependent on a few players," Voss said.

"So we had to rejig our forward structure and change our formations a little bit. Hopefully the fact we've trained that way means we don't have to change much with Jonathan out.

"But we're more than happy we're adequately prepared; we'd just like the big fella out there, that's all."

Brown is expected to miss the next eight to 10 weeks after suffering multiple facial fractures against Fremantle.

While Voss will primarily look to Mitch Clark to lead the Lions' forward line during this period, he said Brown's absence meant some of the Lions' young talls would enjoy senior opportunities over the coming weeks.

Key-position player Tom Collier and ruckman Broc McCauley, who was elevated from the Lions' rookie list this week, were named on the extended interchange bench for this Sunday's clash against the Western Bulldogs.

Even if they don't make the final side named on Friday afternoon, Voss said both were still strong chances to play in the coming weeks.

Others who could come into contention include key-position player Aaron Cornelius and ruckman Bryce Retzlaff, Voss said.

In addition to their work on team structures, Voss said the Lions had used the pre-season to blood its growing list of youngsters.

"We basically played nearly every kid we had on our list in the pre-season and it helped us find a couple of players who are almost ready to play senior footy," Voss said.

He said other Lions youngsters in this boat included midfielder Jared Polec, who was also named on the Lions' extended interchange bench this round, while the club also blooded three debutants in round one - Rohan Bewick, Claye Beams and Ryan Lester. All three impressed against Fremantle and held their spots for round two.

Brown's absence obviously leaves a considerable leadership void, one Voss said he was never tempted to fill with former club co-captains Simon Black and Luke Power.

Instead, vice-captains Jed Adcock and Daniel Merrett will get the chance to develop their leadership skills.

"Simon and Luke have enjoyed the fact there are others stepping up and there's no reason to look back now and stop where our progression needs to go," Voss said.

"So for us having Jed and 'Rog' (Merrett) able to assume the mantle for the next eight to nine weeks while 'Browny' recovers is a natural progression for us as a footy team."
