HAWTHORN is set to take even more advantage of versatile duo Jack Gunston and James Sicily, preparing to have the two swap ends during the season.

Sicily, 24, was on track to make the Virgin Australia AFL All Australian side before a broken right wrist interrupted his campaign.

Meanwhile, the only time Gunston has booted fewer than 46 goals in the past six seasons was 2017, when injuries forced him to move down back.

The 27-year-old showed his natural football nous in defence, showing off his ability to read the play and provide drive from the backline.

While he returned to attack in 2018, that won't be a permanent move according to Sicily, who told AFL.com.au the two would switch roles when the situation called for it.

"(I'll be) predominantly down back. I think Gunston and myself will maybe chop and change in between games," Sicily said.

It might be a move that suits Sicily as he believes the rule change enforcing a 6-6-6 formation at centre bounces makes it tougher for defenders.

"It's definitely a bit harder to defend. You feel like you can't really get any sort of team defence, because there's a lot more space for the forwards to work into," Sicily said.
