COLLINGWOOD coach Nathan Buckley is not a fan of the substitute rule, believing it can be "let go".

The rule was introduced before the 2011 season in a bid to slow down the game and reduce high-impact collisions.

However, it has met opposition from clubs in recent years who have called for a change to the rule or for it to be abandoned completely.

The tightening of the interchange cap – which allows 120 interchanges per quarter – has also contributed to that view.

"[The] sub rule can be let go, in my opinion," Buckley said in response to a question as part of AFL Media's #AskTheCoach series.

Buckley also spoke of the strong pre-seasons enjoyed by Patrick Karnezis and Josh Thomas.

Karnezis is yet to play for Collingwood since being traded from the Brisbane Lions in 2013, while Thomas' 2014 campaign was interrupted by injury.

Buckley said the pair would receive senior opportunities in 2015.

"Patty K (Karnezis) is training well (and) has made great gains in his fitness this off-season," Buckley said.

"We think he'll play senior footy this year and will have his chance to be part of the forward mix and even on the wing.

"JT (Thomas) showed in 2013 that he play at the (AFL) level. We want to see more of that."
