Coming off the back of a breakthrough year, Sydney Swans forward Jarred Moore is aiming to take his game further this season as he strives to play a pivotal role in the team’s quest for a premiership.

Moore, 23, had a rollercoaster start to his career and undertook a rigorous preseason last year to play all but one of the Swans home and away games.

Taken at pick number 31 in the 2004 National Draft, Moore made himself a permanent target up forward alongside Barry Hall and Michael O’Loughlin, where he finished the year averaging 14 possessions and one goal a game.

However, Moore’s rise through the squad was not a simple task. Chosen as an emergency for the 2005 premiership side, Moore struggled to play regular senior matches in the following two seasons.

A commitment to training and a strong work ethic assisted the motivated Moore to break into the senior team but he said it was a matter of now or never for him last season.

“It was definitely a make or break year and I had to make use of the opportunity they gave me and hopefully I did that,” Moore said.

Moore’s hard work both on and off the field was rewarded further over the summer when he was chosen by his peers to be a part of the Swans leadership group.

“It’s a big step so I want to improve on leadership but also I still want to consolidate my spot in the side,” Moore said.

“I’m honoured to be honest, to be part of that group and part of the likes that have come through there like the (Brett) Kirk’s and the Craig Bolton’s and the Leo's (Barry) - it’s obviously a big honour to be a part of it.”

Moore, who earned five Brownlow Medal votes last year and finished tenth in the Club’s best and fairest, has offered his support and assistance to many of the younger players coming through the ranks.

“Something I’m already starting to do is to try to talk to some of the young guys and give a bit of feedback in terms of where they are sitting and try and give them a few tips here and there,” he said.

“I suppose as a young guy you come in and you basically want to do everything you can to get a game and it really puts pressure on the guys that have been around for a couple of years to keep in front of those guys.”
