Garlett quit Hawthorn on Monday after struggling to cope with the demands of the elite level.
The talented 20-year-old's future appeared to be in limbo when his former club Swan Districts rejected his return on Friday.
Swans released a statement saying he was "presently not part of the club's 2014 plans", with the club's board admitting concerns over his welfare.
But Perth chief executive Marty Atkins and coach Damien McMahon told News Ltd they were hopeful of picking up Garlett.
However, the WAFL's player points cap and transfer fees could be roadblocks.
The Perth hierarchy would also need to be sure Garlett would "respect the WAFL".
"I've got no doubt he won't be lost to the WAFL," Atkins said.
"I hope that, whether it be us or somebody, he's able to organise firstly to get onto the list.
"And if he does get onto a list, then it's up to Dayle to make sure he does the right thing."
Demons coach McMahon believes the WAFL has a duty to welcome Garlett back and give him the opportunity to turn his career around.
"We've seen many a kid in a similar position and they manage to get themselves together as they get a little it older and more mature," McMahon said.
The Demons are aiming for a return to finals for the first time in 17 years and have started the season with two wins
Garlett was recruited by Hawthorn with its second selection - pick no. 38 overall - in last year's NAB AFL Draft after booting 48 goals in 19 games for Swans in 2013.
