Brisbane Lions Captain Jonathan Brown was one of the many local and Australian celebrities who gave their time on Sunday evening to help out with the “Australia Unites: Flood Relief Appeal” telethon.

Brown was on hand live from the South Bank Piazza where it was announced that the AFL and all 18 Clubs had combined to contribute $500,000.00 towards the appeal.

The floods over the past few weeks in Queensland have affected more than 200,000 people, devastating the farming and coal industries, and leaving many homeless.

The “Australia Unites: Flood Relief Appeal” has produced an outstanding result, with over $10 million raised already.

Brown, Aaron Cornelius and Bryce Retzlaff were on hand at the South Bank Piazza and call centres to take donations from members of the public and support the cause.

“Living in Queensland, we need to get behind our own. Queenslanders have always embraced the Lions as a footy club and in this time of need we need to give back,” Brown said.

“Our thoughts are with all those affected by the floods.”

AFL Chief Executive Officer Andrew Demetriou said that the AFL felt it was important to contribute to the appeal and support those impacted by the floods.

“The Queensland community has embraced our game and the AFL competition particularly through the Brisbane Lions and the establishment of the Gold Coast Suns,” Mr Demetriou said.

“After the immediate crisis subsides, we will also consider what else we can do in conjunction with our Clubs and AFL Queensland to support the communities impacted by the floods.”
