The West Coast Eagles Football Club is deeply saddened by the passing of Trevor Sprigg MLA, an individual with an impressive football heritage and strong links to the club.

As chairman of selectors during the first West Coast Eagles premiership, a position he had held from 1990, Trevor also played an integral role in selecting the club's historic Team 20, made up of the best 22 players to represent West Coast in the club's first two decades in the competition.

West Coast chief executive officer Trevor Nisbett this afternoon extended his condolences to the Sprigg family on behalf of the football club.

"It's a very sad day for the state, for football and for the Sprigg family," Nisbett said.

"Trevor was a marvellous person for football in this state, both in playing and administrating, and particularly dear to our hearts as chairman of selectors with the West Coast Eagles for our first premiership.

"He has done some of the most remarkable things in football throughout his career and he is certainly going to be sadly missed by the West Coast Eagles, as well as by everyone in football and also the community because of the amount of work he's been doing in politics over the last few years.

"His passing is an absolute shock. We were stunned to learn of the news today and it's terrible for everyone who has been involved with Trevor over so many years, particularly the people who knew him for who he was. He was just a wonderful person and what you see is what you get with Trevor.

"Some of Trev's ideas at match committee stand out more than anything else. Obviously working for a brewery he was fairly partial to a drink, Trev, and he came up with some wonderful suggestions at times, like playing Ryan Turnbull on the wing and things like that.

"He was a wonderful guy and did a great deal for our club. He's always kept in touch with the people he was involved with, particularly the match committee.

"Over the years, whether it be in media, whether it be in football, whether it be in politics, he's always had his say, he's always been a good laugh and we've always had a lot of fun. It's just such a sad day."
