Hi there kids,

Jed Adcock here – welcome to my first column for the young people’s section of our club website.

My teammate Daniel Bradshaw has written ‘Braddy’s Beat’ here for the last couple of years and from what I’m told, it was very popular.

So I’ve got big boots to fill, but I’ll do my best to keep it interesting and informative for you.

I guess most of you will be just getting back from holiday at this time of year, but there hasn’t been much let-up for myself or my teammates at the Brisbane Lions.

We had close to a couple of weeks off ourselves over Christmas, but we have pretty strict personal programs that we have to follow.

There was no tucking into the plum pudding or trifle for us at Christmas lunch, and many of us went for a run on Christmas Day to keep the legs ticking over.

Our first game of the pre-season is only weeks away now, so we have to be careful to stay in good shape over our short Christmas break and hit the ground running at the start of January.

It’s a lot different for those of you who play junior footy, with many clubs not starting until March.

That’s okay, but if you want to get the jump on the opposition, why not start running and kicking the ball yourself a month ahead of everybody else.

Certainly once you get to AFL level, or even any of the senior grades below it, you appreciate the benefits of a full pre-season more.

I loved playing basketball in the summer and footy in the winter, and each kept me in good shape for the other.

You can also pick up skills from one sport that complements the other, so I recommend being as active as you can when you’re a kid.

Speaking of being active, don’t forget the club’s Pre-Season Family Fun Day at Wet’n’Wild Water World on February 10.

It will be a lot of fun for kids, their families and the players.

Speak to you next week.
