DUSTIN Fletcher's amazing football journey will continue for at least one more season, with the Essendon veteran to play on for a 21st season.

The two time premiership player and All Australian has played 365 games since debuting against Carlton in 1993 - currently sitting seventh for the most games played in VFL/AFL history.

After coming third in the Dons' 2012 best and fairest count, the star defender has extended his contract for one year.

The 37-year-old said he made the decision when he was running laps of Windy Hill just days after the 2012 season had concluded.

"I’m still really enjoying my footy and I think that was the key to playing on next season," Fletcher said.

"To come in and work with 40 blokes who are all mates of mine and all love their footy, you couldn’t ask for a better job.

"The old body feels good, I’ve still got a bit of pace and I’m sure Hirdy will go easy on me at training."

Bombers coach James Hird said Fletcher’s professionalism was the reason behind his longevity in one of the world’s most demanding sports.

"We always said the call to play on would be up to Fletch, and I’m glad he is," Hird said.

"He’s a terrific competitor, he listens to his body, prepares well and I wish he had another 350 games in him."
