PORT Adelaide midfielder Simon Phillips is headed for the operating room after suffering a fractured jaw at training on Wednesday.

The 23-year-old former Sydney Swan will have a plate inserted in the break on Friday and will be kept from contact training for six weeks.

However he will be able to resume non-contact training within 10 days of the operation, which the club says will enable him to improve his running ability.

The injury is a cruel blow for the quick midfielder, who has already spent five months away from contact training because of post-season shoulder surgery.

After five matches for the Swans in 2006-07, Phillips moved to South Australia and played for Norwood in the SANFL for three years, including the club's grand final appearance in 2010.

He made his way to Alberton in the trade period last year after being pre-listed by Gold Coast, traded for the compensation pick the Power received for Nathan Krakouer last October.

Port Adelaide will have this weekend off before entering the NAB Challenge series after losing to both Adelaide and Melbourne in the NAB Cup last Friday night.

Simon Phillips is a $97,600 midfielder in the Toyota AFL Dream Team competition.
