AFTER dominating the first half, the pressure had come back on Hawthorn, which had been outplayed by Carlton in the third quarter and seen its lead halved in a matter of minutes.

The fourth quarter was proving a tight affair with both teams searching for the opening goal and the momentum.

As the Hawks went into attack at the nine-minute mark, Carlton's Bret Thornton appeared to have the better position, but he slipped and Lance Franklin swooped.

The tall, mobile forward ran onto the loose ball and headed towards goal.

He collected the ball outside 50, turned on the after-burners, out-ran Thornton and gave the Hawks a vital break.
