At Saturday night’s 2010 Hall of Fame celebration, it was not only the guests who were excited about the attendance of St Kilda Legend, Tony Lockett. As a very rare appearance for Lockett with his old Club, players from the current St Kilda senior team were also eager to meet the full forward for the first time.

Speaking at a media conference yesterday, Saints Vice Captain Lenny Hayes said; “I met Tony Lockett out the back just before he went on stage and it was a real thrill for me.”

“I remember watching him as a kid, I barracked for the Swans growing up and I remember that day he kicked 10 against them - I think I cried after that game” Hayes joked.

“He’s just got such a great aura around him and it is great to have him back around the Club. It was a really important night for the footy Club and one that proved to be really successful.”

“I know that the players were really thrilled to be able to have a chat to him, and just to meet him. Plugger was one of the greatest full forwards the Club has ever produced so to have him involved and have him around the players was a great night for the Club.”

With the Hall of Fame highlighting the rich history of the Saints, Hayes said that all the players are encouraged to get a deeper understanding of the Club when they first arrive at Moorabbin.

“I think it is really important that when young guys come to the Club they understand where the Club has been and where it has come from.”

“I know when I was handed the number 7 jumper I was told to look up a bit about the history behind it, and I know we still do that with the young guys when they come to the Club now.”

“So when you do get to meet some of those guys it plays a really important part of just being part of the Club and seeing where we have come from.”

Saints TV captured the excitement from the night, with an exclusive interview with the one and only Tony Lockett.
