Woewodin played a total of 200 senior matches with both Melbourne and Collingwood during an illustrious AFL career which spanned eight seasons and included two Grand Final appearances, before heading back home to Western Australia where he represented East Fremantle in the WAFL.
He officially hung up the boots at the end of 2007 and was immediately appointed as East Fremantle's Senior Coach. In 2010, Woewodin guided the Sharks to their first WAFL Finals appearance in eight years.
With senior coaching experience, the 34 year-old now returns to the AFL ranks to bolster the Lions' coaching staff.
"Shane developed a healthy reputation as a player for his tremendous work ethic and professionalism which has since translated to his off-field roles in the WAFL," Senior Coach Michael Voss said.
"He comes with experience having already spent three seasons at the helm of East Fremantle and we believe he will be a valuable addition to our coaching staff."
