INCOMING West Coast chairman Alan Cransberg has reiterated his club's guarantee that coach John Worsfold's job is safe, at least until his contract expires at the end of 2011.

Cransberg, who will replace Mark Barnaba on October 31, said he had been disappointed by the public's reaction to West Coast's slide down the ladder since its 2006 premiership, particularly given Worsfold's record.

The Eagles are in bottom spot for the first time since 1989 and face the prospect of collecting their first ever wooden spoon, but Cransberg said re-signing Worsfold next year would be the best result for the club.

"He has a contract that will run through 2011 and the ideal situation for me is that he runs through that and that we see enough improvement that we continue to employ Woosh as the senior coach," Cransberg said from Subiaco Oval on Saturday morning.

"We have a process that normally in the middle of his last year we sit down and talk about extensions or otherwise.

"Obviously we're disappointed with where we are as a club, but if you look at the fabric of this club in terms of the premierships we've won, he [played] an integral role in that as a player.

"He took the club over as a coach when we were at a very low ebb [and] in four or five years he built it up into two grand final appearances, one of which was successful."

Cransberg, a dual premiership player with WAFL club Swan Districts and managing director of Alcoa Australia, said West Coast needed to ensure Worsfold had the right support around him and said fast-tracking the development of the club's young players would be a priority.

Barnaba, who succeeded Dalton Gooding at the end of 2007 - one of the club's darkest periods - said he took great pride in what he had achieved with West Coast and that the handover would be seamless.

"In having Alan here, it's been a great coup for the club," Barnaba said.

"He's clearly a business leader, a man of football talent, but more importantly just a person of character. That's what you want at the leadership of the club.

"I think Alan will do a fantastic job at this club and I think the club will go from strength to strength."
