Crows’ win over Suns proves nothing: Craig

ADELAIDE coach Neil Craig believes a 57-point dismantling of Gold Coast proves nothing about his AFL club. The Crows weathered a Gary Ablett special to post a 20.10 (130) to 9.19 (73) victory at AAMI Stadium on Saturday, a win headlined by a six-goal haul from Patrick Dangerfield. The emerging Crow triggered an Adelaide revival after they were stunned early by the Ablett-inspired Suns. The Gold Coast captain kicked three of the initial four goals of the game, as his side raced to a 25-point lead midway through the opening quarter. But the Crows then piled on 15 goals to two, steamrolling their inexperienced opponents to notch their third win of the season. Craig was enthused by the response to a 96-point thumping by Melbourne last week, led by captain Nathan van Berlo (36 disposals), Graham Johncock (31 touches) and Scott Thompson (34 possessions).

Ablett superb but Suns go down

NOT even the wizardry of skipper and birthday boy Gary Ablett could prevent the Gold Coast Suns from going down to the Adelaide Crows at AAMI Stadium Saturday afternoon. In his best game with the Suns to date, the superstar could not be stopped -- finishing the match with 41 disposals and four goals on his 27th birthday. But overall, after quarter-time the Suns just could not go with the plucky Crows, who were badly in need of a win. It was the Crows who went into the half-time break with a 31-point lead after a topsy-turvy opening half. Adelaide came to life after quarter-time while the Coast fell away from the things they did so well early on. The Crows took advantage to kick seven goals to nil in the quarter and steal the momentum. They kicked away to lead by 45 points at the last change and then went on to win by 57 points.

Dangerfield stars as Crows beat Suns

EMERGING Adelaide utility Patrick Dangerfield has kicked six goals, helping the Crows return to the winner's list with a 57-point victory over Gold Coast. The Suns stunned the parochial 36,056 crowd early, inspired by their skipper Gary Ablett, who produced a memorable four-goal performance. The Crows, who were thumped by Melbourne by 96 points last start, found themselves 25 points behind midway through the first term. Adelaide did not register a goal until Ricky Henderson's breakthrough in the 16th minute, but it was the first in a period of sustained Adelaide command which reaped 15 goals to Gold Coast's two. Adelaide booted seven unanswered goals in the second quarter, turning a 14-point quarter-time deficit into a 31-point buffer at the main break. Captain Nathan van Berlo, the versatile Dangerfield and key onballer Scott Thompson were pivotal in the turnaround.

Crows beaten to the punch

COACH Neil Craig will look at the clearance conundrum as the Crows prepare to play Collingwood on Sunday. The Crows saved their season with Saturday's 57-point triumph against AFL fledgling Gold Coast but Craig admitted the club's lack of clearance wins needs to be addressed urgently. Adelaide was belted 53-28 in clearances against the Gary Ablett-led Suns a week after losing the clearance count 51-37 against Melbourne. Craig said clearances would be at the top of his agenda this week and he would work through the issue with midfield coach Scott Camporeale and ruck coach Matthew Clarke. "Our clearances were poor, we got belted in clearances," Craig said. "To win by nearly 10 goals with the clearance differential we got is one for the record books, so we need to do a lot of work on that.”
