MELBOURNE president Jim Stynes and football operations general manager Chris Connolly addressed the red and blue faithful in the dressing rooms after the team's thrilling one-point win over the Brisbane Lions at the MCG on Sunday.

The two club favourites spoke passionately about the win and what it meant for the club.

Stynes also singled out the players' parents for their support and after lauding the win as "tremendous" used a boxing analogy in terms of where the club now sits.

"It's a bit like being in a boxing ring," Stynes said.

"We've been belted around and we've just got to hang in there and hang in the ring and then the bell will go and we'll get a break and then we'll come back out and we'll get back in the game and that's what we need to do and then we'll get on top of it."

Connolly had a different take on the victory, saying: "Sometimes moons line up in certain ways and today it was a terrific win by the players."
