WEST Coast coach John Worsfold is adamant that the Eagles' stunning resurgence in 2011 will not bring his contract negotiations forward from the end of this season.

Worsfold and the West Coast board have "a mutual commitment, chief executive Trevor Nisbett says, to wait until season's end before negotiating a possible extension for the 10-year coach.

The 5-3 Eagles are widely considered certain finalists this season, having leapt from last place in 2010 to sixth on the ladder following a 20-goal demolition of the Western Bulldogs.

However, Worsfold remained realistic about his side's start to the season ahead of a blockbuster clash with Collingwood at the MCG, and said his future would be negotiated "later rather than sooner".

"I'm more than comfortable with the club's position and my position," the coach said from Patersons Stadium on Wednesday.

"It was mutual, that 'Let's get through the season before we make any decision about what's the best way forward for the team and the club'.

"I would love to see this group win a premiership, I would be very proud of them winning a premiership and I'd love to be part of that.

"But all that will be [decided] at the end of the season when you actually can have a clear head and sit down and think about it."

West Coast is yet to play ladder leader Geelong or fifth-placed Carlton, and will clash with reigning premier Collingwood for the first time this season on Saturday.

Worsfold said there were plenty of challenges ahead for his team, which had progressed as he'd hoped this season.

"We haven't got through one round of everyone playing each other yet," he said. "That's when you get a fair idea and that's why I'm saying we haven't played a lot of the top sides.

"We haven't played Collingwood or Geelong or Carlton yet, those teams that are in great form, and we've been beaten by Essendon, Hawthorn and Sydney, who are around our mark.

"So there's six challenges that we haven't met yet or succeeded against.

"In my mind we've taken the steps forward that I'd hoped we would take, still with a clear picture of where we are."

West Coast can take an unchanged line-up into Saturday's clash with the Pies, but Worsfold said the club's in-form WAFL players would be assessed.

Midfielder Koby Stevens and running defender Jacob Brennan are both pushing close to selection, while "super sub" Andrew Gaff returned to the WAFL and had 28 possessions in a strong performance for South Fremantle.

Worsfold said he would pick his substitute player based on form, and anything less than a win against Collingwood would not be considered a success.

"Ultimately not, because that's what we're measured on. So we go over there trying to win he game for sure," he said.

"They (Collingwood) have stepped up again from last year's form, mindful that they've had some players in and out this year.

"Overall, I think they're up and going at least as well as they were this time last year."
