RICHMOND skipper Kane Johnson has apologised to his teammates after urinating outside a police station over the weekend.

Johnson was arrested and charged with being drunk in a public place after celebrating his 30th birthday on Saturday night. He has taken a “self-imposed” one-week ban, plus a $5000 fine imposed by the club.

Johnson spoke to his teammates before training on Monday.

"He just spoke to the players then and expressed his remorse and he was the sort of person and leader you'd expect him to be with the players," said Richmond director of football Greg Miller.

"I know as a group they totally support him and they know it was a compete aberration and not something you'd expect Kane to be involved with at all, the last person you'd expect that of at our football club."

Johnson will not lose his captaincy, with Miller calling the incident a "one-off".

"You understand Kane has strong values and he felt that he let the whole group down," Miller said.

"He sold those values to the whole team. We have trademarks and values that we live by and Kane's driven those through the whole club, and for him to make the mistake that he did of course he felt that (suspension) was the appropriate action.

"For him to make that mistake, he'll forever regret it."

Johnson, who lives next door to the police complex, also volunteered to take up an educational role in the community.

He is set to appear in court on April 22.

“Obviously I’m deeply sorry for my actions,” Johnson said on Monday morning.

“I’ve let a lot of people down at the footy club and also fans around Australia and I just want to hopefully move on very quickly.

“I just want to talk to the leadership [group] and my fellow players first of all to address them and that’s all I want to say about it.”

Johnson had been due to play his 100th game for Richmond on Sunday after 104 with Adelaide, but that milestone will have to wait until the round three game against Collingwood.
