NORTH Melbourne coach Dean Laidley has sprung to the defence of Shannon Grant and categorically stated that he will not drop him back to the VFL.

Grant has kicked just 14 goals from his 11 matches so far but Laidley was unequivocal in his support.

"Shannon Grant will never play in the VFL while I'm coach. Regardless of his form," Laidley said at Wednesday’s press conference.

Grant, who started his career in the midfield before taking on the role of a small forward, is now in his 14th season in the AFL.

Laidley explained that Grant’s tackle average was higher than any year since 2004 and that he has the same average disposals as last season.

"Shannon's form has been reasonable, but our expectation is probably a little higher than he's been giving us," he said.

Laidley said the 291-game veteran's worth extended beyond his goal output, although he still had to justify his place in the team, but he praised his work with the young forwards.

"Look, his work with them this year, with their development, has been very good. It's been very good.

"Which is fantastic, but you've still got to make sure that you're performing as well."
