ESSENDON midfielder Jobe Watson believes Friday night's clash with the Western Bulldogs will be entertaining, with many experienced players keen to run out.

The match, now to be played as the NAB Cup Bushfire Appeal game at Telstra Dome, will feature veterans who would have sat out had the game remained in Darwin.

"It will probably mean that the standard might be a bit higher than some of the earlier NAB Cup games," Watson said on Thursday.

"I saw the Collingwood-West Coast game last week and Collingwood had a pretty full strength side in and they looked to be moving the ball well.

"Hopefully from a spectator's point of view, the game is of a good standard."

Watson, 24, said six or seven Bombers put their hand up to play in the fundraiser.

"Guys are keen to be out there and involved in the game, for a special cause," he said.

"We have a few guys from around that area. Michael Still, one of our first year picks, had friends in and around the area [where the fires are].

"Brent Stanton's girlfriend's mother had a place up in Kinglake too.

"There are a few guys who have a personal involvement with it. It's been a tough week for everyone and for the guys who know people personally, they've felt it a bit harder."

Watson said he was always going to play after approaching Matthew Knights on Monday morning – shortly before the match was moved to Melbourne – and requesting a spot.

He said new recruit David Zaharakis was a chance to play despite suffering a personal tragedy on the weekend when close friend Melanie Shuey was killed in a road accident.

"It's something that is hard for anyone to go through, especially for a young guy like Dave who has only just come to the club," he said.

"It was his ex-girlfriend but he was obviously still in touch with her and pretty close, and it's been a hard week for him and for the three Northern Knights guys we've got.

"They knew the girl and the family, so he's a bit unsure of where he is with his head but I spoke to him before and he's keen to come out and play well.

"It's something he'll be able to look back on and it will make him a stronger person if he's able to get out there and run around."
