ST KILDA coach Ross Lyon says he is confident the drama surrounding Stephen Milne and Leigh Montagna will not affect his team’s preparation for this Friday’s clash with Geelong.

A news report on Monday featured a former policeman alleging that the rape allegations made against Milne and Montagna six years ago had been interfered with.

The story has dominated the media for much of the week but Lyon said he hoped it would galvanise his group.

“It’s not ideal, but we’re industry professionals and we represent 40,000 members and a player group. We’ve got a game against last year’s premier to help us focus. All of us are feeling a range of emotions but ultimately we can use that as a stimulus to continue to focus our preparation as best we can,” Lyon said.

“I speak to all my players. All those conversations are private. My support and care is for all the playing group.

"We’ve got 48 on the list and clearly there are a couple of players under the microscope here but they have our full support and we’ve encouraged them to continue to focus on their football.”

Lyon would not be drawn in to comment on the allegations which have prompted a police investigation.

“Clearly we’ve all got significant questions that you would like to be asked and need to be answered and I’m sure once that investigation concludes by police and their department for integrity, everything will be put into perspective ... then I think we’re in a position to make comments,” he said.

The allegation is the latest drama to surround the Saints this year after Andrew Lovett was sacked following a rape charge, and a relationship between players and a pregnant teenage girl was uncovered.

Lyon said the club had handled every off-field problem with aplomb, and had not let them affect its performance on the field.

“Since the summer we’ve worked our way through a few issues. Plenty of people are prepared to say that will stop us or our ability to play some good football [but] we’ve worked our way to 9-3.

“We’re all feeling different things and all got questions that needed to be answered ... but we are here to focus on our footy and be proud of the group - their ability to work together and stick together, not make any assumptions and not make any incorrect judgments and focus on their footy.”
