ST KILDA goalsneak Adam Schneider says his teammates haven't lost any belief in themselves, despite another close loss on Monday night.

The Saints slumped to their fourth defeat of the season, falling short by just three points in a gripping contest against Carlton at Etihad Stadium.

The result added to the one-point loss to Geelong in round one and the draw with Richmond in round two as costly missed opportunities for a team now placed in the bottom four on the AFL ladder.

"We've proven over the last couple of years that we're definitely good enough," Schneider said post-match.

"I think the difference this year is we've lost those close games, which in the past we've probably won.

"So we've definitely got the belief. We don't go into any game thinking we can't win.

"We've just got to get back to playing four quarters, and hopefully the result will come our way."

Schneider said the way his team played showed last year's runner-up still had the capability to play good football after a disappointing performance in Adelaide the week before.

"We thought we went forward a little bit the way we played," he said.

"We just wanted to get back and be aggressive and play some good attacking footy.

"You can win and go backwards, but we thought we lost but maybe went forwards a little bit."

The 26 year-old was one of the Saints' best with 24 possessions and two goals, playing close to goals and further up the ground.

"I'm enjoying playing forward a little bit, and then sneaking onto a wing and the occasional hit in the midfield," Schneider said.

"It's good to help out the boys in the middle because the running game these days is so high and the demand on players in the midfield is quite tough, so it's good to get out there and give the boys a chop-out."

Schneider said the Saints will enter their next assignment believing they can begin the climb back into finals contention.

"Next week we've got Hawthorn and we're going to go into the game confident that we can come away with the four points," he said.
