A FIT Paul Hasleby and Des Headland, and either Daniel Rich or Stephen Hill coming through the NAB AFL draft, will greatly improve Fremantle's midfield, according to new assistant coach Todd Curley.

Curley will work with Barry Mitchell as midfield coach, fresh from three years in charge of WAFL club West Perth. After seeing West Australians Rich and Hill first-hand he has no doubt both can make an impact in the AFL.

Fremantle has the third pick in the draft and with Jack Watts and Nicholas Naitanui expected to be the first two players taken by Melbourne and West Coast, Rich is the favourite to be taken next. But Hill is an exciting prospect.

Curley coached against Rich when the youngster was playing with Subiaco and coached Hill at West Perth in the second half of the season, and was impressed with his attitude, skill and versatility.

"Hilly's a great talent and will go pretty early," he said.

"He did really well at the draft camp and always steps up when challenged, so he's going to be a special player. He comes from a great family and everything we asked of him when he played in the league team after the state 18s he did."

"He played in run-with roles, as an attacking player and I'm sure wherever he ends up they will be very lucky to have him, but they are both great young players."

Curley has just started in the job as Fremantle's four- to eight-year players join the younger players in pre-season, and he's confident the club's midfield will improve.

"I have just started today and spent the morning getting introduced to the staff and players. I will be working closely with Barry Mitchell on the midfield and I'm really looking forward to it," he said.

"After being in the senior role you are across all areas so it's not totally foreign to me, and I will bring in some of my own thoughts and ideas on how things should operate in the midfield.

"The top three teams from last year had the best midfields so we will be working really hard throughout the summer to improve in that area."

Curley is confident that a fully fit Hasleby and Headland, plus improvement from Rhys Palmer, Garrick Ibbotson, Byron Schammer and the new additions, can help Fremantle's midfield strength.

"Obviously we have lost a lot of experience, especially in the midfield area, but we now have the opportunity to play a lot of young players," he said.

"It's an exciting time, though, as while experience does count for a lot it's always great to see young guys getting an opportunity. If you look at this season just gone, Hasleby was injured early and so was Headland, so we are confident that if everyone is up and going we can do pretty well next year."
