HAWTHORN is expecting Luke Hodge to play at least two NAB Challenge matches before the home and away season.

Hodge is yet to have a competitive hit out since the club eased his training load three weeks ago after he reported stiffness in his achilles.

The Hawthorn captain was sidelined for the Hawks' intra club match in Tasmania on February 4 and missed the NAB Cup round one clashes against Fremantle and West Coast.

The Hawks are yet to confirm if Hodge will play in this week's NAB Challenge clash with North Melbourne but football manager Mark Evans said he would play just two pre-season matches before round one of the home and away season.

"About three weeks ago he was backed off a little bit and he has built back up into full training," Evans told afl.com.au.

"The good thing is it is not overly painful and it's more precautionary at this stage."

Hodge was appointed the Hawks skipper after Sam Mitchell stepped aside at the end of last year.

He has played 173 games since debuting in 2002 and won the Norm Smith medal for his efforts across half-back in the 2008 premiership.
