SYDNEY Swans coach John Longmire hopes his side can emulate the full ground defensive pressure that was a feature of its 2005 premiership.

The success of the Swans in 2005 and 06 was largely due to a highly defensive game plan implemented by former coach Paul Roos that was aimed at suffocating the opposition.

In his first year as senior coach, Longmire has focused the club's pre-season on returning to this style of play in the hope it will bring the Swans success in 2011.

"If I look at when we played our best footy in the past, in '05 and '06, our pressure was outstanding," Longmire said from the Swans' training base at Lakeside Oval on Wednesday.

"Even last year when we played our best football, our pressure was very good. We've got to be a bit more consistent in regards to that."

The Swans put their new game plan to the test last Saturday night in round one of the NAB Cup against new comers Gold Coast and Greater Western Sydney, but Longmire knows the real challenge will come during Friday night's NAB Cup qualifying final at Etihad Stadium when the Swans face premier Collingwood.

In 2010, the Swans forward pressure was the worst in the competition with the team ranked last when it came to forcing turnovers in their forward half, while Collingwood were the number one ranked side when it came to pressuring its opposition into coughing it up in its forward 50.

"Coming up against Collingwood we'll be really tested," Longmire said.

"They're the best team in the competition from last year so we need to be on our game. We've still got a lot to learn and lot to improve and we'll continue to do that.

"To be able to play Collingwood and really test our structure and what we've been playing with will be really important."

Defender Nick Malceski admitted there had definitely been a bigger focus on defence over the pre-season, with Collingwood's full ground pressure used as a model for the Swans' improved game style.

"We had it in place when Roosy [Paul Roos] was here but I think there's more of an emphasis on it this year about our defence," Malceski said.

" We want to make sure we've got the best defensive team in the league.

"Obviously they're [Collingwood] the best defensive team in the league and their forward pressure and tackling last year was unbelievable.

"You look at the best teams in the league that do it and you try and implement some of the things they're doing. I think we've done that this year and we'll implement that against them this week.

"It's a great challenge for the footy club I think playing the best team in the competition who obviously won the premiership last year. It'll be good to see whether our new game plan holds up against them."

The Swans' backline will be bolstered on Friday night with the return of key defender Heath Grundy, while forward Ryan O'Keefe also comes into the squad.
