The moment: It was Lance Franklin’s night and the highlight was when he gathered the ball outside 50 and took on opponent Cale Hooker in a foot race. Franklin had several bounces and pushed himself deep in the pocket where he kicked on his left foot. The ball sailed through and everyone at the ground marvelled at the superstar.

The moment: Fremantle's Anthony Morabito is getting into the World Cup spirit. After he found some space in the Fremantle forward line, Morabito had the smarts to soccer the ball cleverly into the path of an oncoming Michael Barlow. Barlow ran onto the sensational soccer pass and drilled home a super goal that brought the purple army to its feet.

The moment: Shane Edwards' side-stepping goal in the first quarter could win goal of the year or at least score him a Dancing with the Stars invitation. Edwards held the ball in as it threatened to go for a behind, then jinked around two Lions defenders to pop it in around the post. A tremendous goal that summed up the Tigers' never-say-die attitude.

The moment: Kangaroo Ed Lower had a kick on the wing, but clearly didn't hear the umpire tell him his time was up and he had to get rid of it. Jackson Trengove was on the mark and ran at him. Lower realised what was going on just in time to be pushed out of bounds.
5. Western Bulldogs 17.17 (119) d West Coast 9.5 (59)

The moment: Just when West Coast needed all the luck they could get, Bulldog skipper Brad Johnson runs off half-back and passes to Daniel Giansiracusa on the wing. Gia fumbles and the ball bounces out of bounds but the boundary umpire is unsighted. Johnson runs on, gratefully accepts a handball and slots home a goal on the run from 50 metres.
6. St Kilda 10.10 (70) d Geelong 6.10 (46) at the MCG

The moment: Steve Johnson suffered a suspected fractured finger early on Friday night, and slippery conditions at the MCG didn't help his handling. It became apparent in the second quarter when Johnson found himself running into an open goal. He fumbled, recovered and dropped the ball again before finally stabbing at the half volley to kick one of the least convincing goals of his career.
7. Collingwood 13.18 (96) d Sydney Swans 10.11 (71) at ANZ Stadium

The moment: Adam Goodes had a night to forget, with the writing on the wall from midway through the opening term. The dual Brownlow medallist flew for a relatively simple mark, only to wear the Sherrin smack in his face. If it was a World Cup tribute, his technique was poor.

The moment: Kurt Tippett came to the Crows from a basketball background, but his first goal on Sunday owed more to volleyball. From a ruck contest in Adelaide’s goal square, Mark Jamar spiked the ball straight to a mid-flight Tippett. He banged it through the sticks to complete another disappointing start for the Demons as Adelaide streaked away.
